Dr. Wafaa El-Sadr, a professor of medicine and epidemiology at Columbia University, says there’s “absolutely no need to panic” amid the Legionnaires' Disease outbreak on the Upper East Side.
"Most people will not suffer any illness from inhaling these organisms. It is only in people who are particularly susceptible, particularly vulnerable to Legionnaire's disease that should be very vigilant. If they develop any symptoms that suggest they might have Legionnaire's disease, it is absolutely critical to immediately seek medical attention. There's absolutely no need to panic. We know how this organism is transmitted. We know how it's not transmitted. We know how to detect it, diagnose it. We know how to treat it. We know who is more susceptible to it. So there's absolutely no need for panic. People just be informed and try to follow the guidance as appropriately to their own conditions."
