Progesterone is complicated — oral can calm and aid sleep, some get the opposite. But topical progesterone is too large to absorb for endometrial protection: a red flag. Sanara Medicine knows the science. Book your consultation in Lodi, CA or telehealth across California.

"Let's talk about it. Progesterone is complicated. Progesterone orally breaks down into a metabolite called Allopregnenolone that has an inhibitory effect in your brain. For a lot of women, they actually like that. They prefer that. That nighttime anxiety that they get when they're in menopause or perimenopause, it actually calms that and helps them sleep well. So they do like it. There are some women who get the opposite effect, a paradoxical effect. That can happen. You can become hyperactive and get insomnia and etc. Some women are very sensitive to dosing changes with the progesterone. Progesterone is only delivered for endometrial protection two good ways and that's orally and intravaginally. Not topically, not through your skin. The molecule size of progesterone is too large to be absorbed transdermally to allow for endometrial protection. It does not reach those serum levels and we know this. It's been studied. So anytime you see progesterone topically, I'd already start wondering. That's sketch. That person doesn't know what they're doing."
