"This is Christine Jorgensen. She is the GI who ended up ousting Elizabeth II's coronation off the front page. Hi, I'm Teresa of the Unhinged History Podcast. We cover the stories that you just didn't learn about in school. Today we're tackling episode 72, titled, Have You Seen My Hat? And this makes a ton of sense in context. Born in 1926, assigned male, and really just the shy kid who wanted to play with dolls, Christine always seemed to have an excuse to keep her clothes on when she was skinny dipping with the boys. World War II kicks off and she's rejected by the army for being too small, then gets drafted anyhow and afterwards uses her GI bill. She goes to photography school and starts studying hormone research for funsies. Then she learns that Denmark is the place that is due in these surgeries for gender affirming care and our girl decides that she's gonna travel there to visit family. 1952, she is in a hospital bed recovering from surgery when news breaks of this whole thing. She, her story ends up kicking Lizzie Tu off the front page. Lizzie Tu had just been coordinated so this was some hot news. She would go on to be a lecturer, entertainer, an inadvertent trans rights pioneer. Her legacy is being fabulously and unapologetically herself. And if you've got somebody that I need to be covering who also kind of meets the same kind of vibe, drop them in the comments and send this to somebody else who would just die to kick a monarch's coronation off the front page."
