"He's saying it's a sexual assault and now almost 6 months later, another detainee says he too was sexually assaulted by an officer with the GEO group, an ICE contractor that runs the detention center. Our comrade Garnett Smith contacted us the day before yesterday. Aaron Miracle is with About Face, a veteran support organization and has been in touch weekly with Garnett Smith, a Spokane father of five and a U.S. Army veteran. He was subject to a very aggressive pat-down that turned into groping. And when he objected, the guards then removed him in handcuffs, which is not typical, and performed a strip search. In February, three black male detainees sued the GEO group and its employees, including one who accused a guard of inappropriately touching his genitals during a pat-down. Miracle says ICE detained Smith over a decades-old no-contact order violation. He says Smith enlisted as a teenager and was promised a U.S. citizenship that never materialized. To serve this country, to be willing to die for this country, and then to be put in a cage after that service, after having been rendered disabled and being in chronic pain every day of his life, and now he's inside of a cage, is just the deepest betrayal. The Tacoma Police Department confirmed with us that officers did respond to this facility And according to their report, it noted that Smith wanted to file charges against that guard, but the officers from the Tacoma Police Department could not find any evidence to support that arrest. We have also reached out to the GEO group, which is the contractor that runs the facility, and also to ICE, but we have not heard back. Joyce? And then what about Smith's immigration case? Yeah, Smith is currently representing himself in a federal case that is a wrongful detention case. He says that he has also filed a violation of what is called the Prison Rape Elimination Act, which is a federal law. Joyce? Alright, in Tacoma."
