"Surprisingly, not enough people know this, but this building on North Broad Street holds an incredibly important role in art history, and for a select number of artists, it offers the opportunity to build a career and a practice built on its legacy. The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, aka PAFA, was the first art school and museum in the United States. As a school, its classrooms have been home to over two centuries of direct, hands-on instruction that have helped formed so many of the greats, from Mary Cassatt to David Lynch. There is a fine arts certificate program that I don't think enough people know about. It's a three-year career training program designed to prepare students for professional careers within the visual arts and related creative industries.
