"What is a quiet lane? It's a minor road where through traffic is restricted, making it safer and more pleasant to walk, wheel, cycle or ride a horse. Quiet lanes use signs, lower speed limits, bollards or gates to stop vehicles using lanes as shortcuts. Local access still remains for residents, farms, businesses, emergency services and essential vehicles. The benefits are simple. Fewer vehicles, safer routes for walking and cycling, less noise and pollution and better links between villages, footpaths and bridleways. They also help protect the character of our countryside, with minimal disruption to journey times because suitable alternative routes are always available. Safer routes, more suitable for local journeys. Follow the link to find out more."
