"Here's five books you should read this summer. First, Politics. This is a book for those that can sense something is wrong with the economy but haven't quite put their finger on it yet. Hetty O'Brien is a journalist for The Guardian and her debut book, The Asset Class, explores the murky world of private equity. If you've noticed that many of the UK's public services are struggling or want to understand how our rivers got dumped with sewage, then this book helps explain one of the reasons why. I reviewed it in our latest issue so you can click the link in our bio for my take. Next, Language. Sophia Smith Gaylor is a journalist specialising in linguistics. She opens up the book with the moving loss of her nonna, an Italian minority speaker of dialect, and explores what it means for native languages to disappear. Also shout out to Sophia for being a certified prospect fan. Now for some fiction. The take by Kelly Yang looks at the experiences of womanhood through the characters of Maggie and Ingrid, who are mid-20s and mid-50s respectively. Both struggling with the difficulties of their ages, They use a new technology to exchange blood and acquire the characteristics they crave. Next, there's this new hybrid collection of short stories, essays and memoir from literary giant Margaret Drabble. What brings this collection together is the feeling of growing old. Life is grim, she says, and facing it takes courage. And finally, if you're interested in the history of the financial world, we have 1873 by former World Bank economist Liyquat Ahmed. This was the year the world experienced something for the very first time. Prices continuously fell. The book is an account of what happened, how the market stabilized afterwards, and how the crisis opened up a new era of antisemitism. We reviewed these books in our July issue, so click the link in our bio to learn more. And happy reading."
