We've been sold a lie - we think we have free market choices but really it's just a handful of powerful corporations controlling everything from meat prices to concert tickets. They're not competing with each other, they're just raising prices and limit... Credit: @abdulelsayed.bsky.social | Source
"The issue that we have right now is that we don't have a real system of capitalism. What we have is corporate oligopoly masquerading as capitalism. So for example, when you go shopping and you want to buy a pound of meat, there are four meat packers who pack that meat and account for about 70% of the entire market share. And all they do is use algorithms to just systematically inflate the price of a pound of meat, which means that you don't have other options. You want to go see a show, it's Ticketmaster. You want to go on a flight, you have one of three, four, maybe five airlines who buy planes from one of two manufacturers. You don't have choices. Think about the thing you probably touch the most in your pocket, your phone. There are probably two phones that account for 90% of the phones, iPhones or Samsung, and on three carriers. And all of them are using algorithms to raise prices. So we need to bust up monopolies. And the way to do that is to actually empower the Federal Trade Commission to actually enforce the laws on the books and then take it a step further. I also believe that we need to stand with unions and pass the Pro Act. Why? Unions are the single most important feature to being able to protect the broad scale prosperity and wages for people. And right now, we're watching as union busting is happening in sector after sector after sector, and the American workforce has changed quite a bit. So we need union growth in otherwise non-traditionally union sectors to keep up with it."
