Alex Schachter should be 23 today. He is 1 of 17 killed in 2018 at Marjory Stoneman in Parkland, FL. He mattered and he should be here. Today’s a good day to learn about Safe Schools for Alex and perhaps donate in his honor. www.safeschoolsforalex.org
"Today, July 9th, Alexander Logan Schachter, he died as a freshman at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. He loved music, particularly marching band. His family established a scholarship to support music students and to celebrate Alex's memory. In addition, they established SafeSchoolForAlex.org and work tirelessly to provide resources for students, parents, school districts, and law enforcement. Alex enjoyed spending time with his family. He looked up to his older brother, enjoyed watching Japanese movies with his older sister, and even allowed his little sister to hang around with he and his friends from time to time. He loved sports, playing basketball and football and watching the Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics. Alex also loved roller coasters and utilized this love to draft a creative writing piece for his freshman English class, reflecting the ups and downs of life. Alex experienced his first major down in life when his mother unexpectedly died in her sleep when he was four. Despite this major loss, Alex was famous in the halls of Marjory Stoneman for his infectious smile, being an upbeat ray of sunshine, and making others smile with his expressive facial features and wild-spirited attitude. Alex's dad recited the roller coaster poem, including these final lines at his son's funeral. It may be too much for you at times, the twists, the turns, the ups and downs, but you get back up and keep chugging along. Eventually, it all comes to a stop. You won't know when or how, but you will know that it will be time to get off and start anew. Life is like a roller coaster. Alex and 16 others died on February 14th, 2018 because an unstable 18-year-old was able to purchase an AR-15 rifle and attack his high school, killing 17 and wounding 17 more. Despite his callous attitude toward his victims, he was granted life in prison rather than the death penalty. As Florida Congressman Bill Nelson put it at the time of the shooting, an AR-15 is not for hunting, it's for killing. Banning AR-15s, or at least raising the age limit for purchasing them, would have made a difference to everybody. It would have made a difference to Alex."
