Queensland Premier David Crisafulli returns to his pre-2024 election mode of holding press conferences with youth crime victims. He insists his slogan will be implemented this year but can't answer detention centre capacity issues or time length of mandatory minimum sentences. #qldpol

"The Premier has failed to answer key questions about his tough new youth crime laws that will see offenders on bail who re-offend serve mandatory jail time. The move has the backing of several victims, but the tough policy remains light on detail. A sickening attack. Shankensett bashed unconscious by youths at the door to his IGA. At least one was out on bail. Nearly one year on, his injuries have healed. Some of his attackers have been dealt with and he stands in support of the Premier's new youth crime laws. I hear too often, too regularly of the occurrence of re-offending that is actually crippling innocent people, whether it be their business, their welfare or even just their livelihood. After the Premier's flashy announcement at the LNP convention yesterday. If you breach bail, you will go to jail. Today came the chance to provide more detail and address concerns about how the new laws will work. In order to be caught up by this, you have to be out on bail and you have to commit an adult crime, adult time offence. But several questions remain unanswered, including how long the minimum mandatory jail sentence will be and what impact the changes will have on youth detention centres, which workers say are already under extreme pressure. We've increased the capacity by 25%. More is coming. Circuit breaker sentencing is coming. The Premier has to acknowledge that there will be absurd cases, there will be unfair cases, there will be extreme sentences. They've put in place a plan and I don't know if there's infrastructure to support it, so I think it's quite problematic. They're all issues set to be discussed in the consultation period, which starts now, the Premier says, and the clock is ticking. These new laws are set to be in by year's end, with just six sitting weeks remaining. No, we will get this done by the end of the year. Jessica Millward, Nine News."
