"The first is that public opinion has not done what many politicians anticipated that once Brexit had actually happened, the public would say, okay, that's done. On the contrary, over 60% of those who have a view one way or the other now say that Britain should rejoin the European Union. Second reason is that Brexit has not turned out to be anything like what it was sold to be by those who supported it. But the economic cost of Brexit, and it's turned out to be a cost, has been even bigger than anticipated. Some of the latest studies say British economy is up to 8% smaller than it would have been, a figure that the Chancellor has recognised as being valid or likely to have been valid. That in turn means for anybody in government, that's a loss of up to £90 billion a year of tax revenue every year. When the whole country is in a debate, can we afford to spend £5 billion extra here on defence or £3 billion more on the health service or can we save something here and we need money for infrastructure, this and that? £90 billion is a huge difference, so the economic consequences of Brexit are really sinking in. And the third reason is the new geopolitical situation. Since Brexit, we've had aggressive military, aggressive Russia to the east of the continent and we now have an unreliable and frankly sometimes dangerous USA to the western side. So all European countries in and out of the EU are beginning to realise that we share common interests and common values."
