"53% of children in young people are not meeting those recommended levels for exercise and physical activity. And yet we know that 40% of sports halls are behind school gates, 32% of fields are behind school gates and 22% of swimming pools are all behind school gates. The Health Committee has been looking at how we can open up those sports facilities because they have a crucial role to play in making sure that we can have active children and meet their health needs as well. It's massively important for schools to be able to open their facilities outside of the school day for not just their pupils but for the wider community. We know that access to facilities is one of the biggest barriers for people's participation in physical activity, particularly for community sports groups to be able to run affordable sessions in appropriate facilities. I think it's important to have school clubs because it can be very healthy and help us get new hobbies and try something new. I think it's important because everybody really needs a chance to do stuff to be active."
