I’m at the edge of midtown Manhattan’s new “frozen zone” where structural integrity concerns over the conversion of the former Pfizer offices into residential apartments forced authorities to shut the area down in case of a total failure scenario.
"I'm standing in the middle of what is being called the Frozen Zone in Midtown Manhattan. I'm on 42nd Street and 3rd Avenue, and the Frozen Zone goes from 40th Street to 45th Street, and 3rd Avenue all the way to 1st Avenue, getting close to the United Nations. The reason for this is that the former Pfizer building, which is back here, which was being turned into a residential apartment building of about 1,600 units, was being widened and also made taller. And on the 21st floor, it was discovered that two structural beams were beginning to buckle, and people were concerned about the structural stability of the building, and city officials were worried that it could possibly collapse. Office buildings all around this area are now closed. The area has been evacuated. No one's allowed to come and go except for first responders and engineers, and no one knows when the zone is going to unfreeze."
