"Hi, this is Mark Elias, founder of Democracy Docket, and as you know, I am also a practicing lawyer and this case, Watson versus Republican National Committee, well, it's quite personal to me because I and my law firm litigated this case from the trial court through the Fifth Circuit and all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. This was a major victory for voting in the United States. The Republican National Committee has been scheming and plotting for years to try to limit mail-in voting. Well, it was the most cynical scheme that they've come up with yet. They argued that the federal election day statute, the law that says that elections for Congress and President in the United States are held on the Tuesday following the first Monday in November, well, they argued that this required that all ballots cast by mail be received by election offices by that election day and that ballots that were mailed by that election day that we know have been mailed by election day because they were postmarked but were received in the days afterwards, well, those had to be thrown in the trash. Now, this would not have affected just a handful of votes. I mean, this would have affected hundreds of thousands of ballots, maybe as many as a million in presidential."
