During a recent Facebook Q&A session I was asked if there was any advice I could give to someone thinking about writing their own book. #writingtips #militaryhistory #ww2 #historybooks

"But really, you've got to have a very clear idea about what it is you want to write about. I mean, that was one of the things when I mentioned speaking to Luke Turner, he was very much, you've got to have a clear idea. And sitting down to write the book proposal was a great way of going, right, what is this book about? Why am I the person who should tell this story and not somebody else? And for me, that was the personal connection, the fact that this was something very, very personal to me about my family and their experiences and a story that I wanted to kind of tell. And I couldn't tell John's story directly because he had left so little information. It was just this couple of pages and photographs and names and addresses where I could kind of get around the edges. So it was like I needed to find other men who had gone through the same things to tell the story that he had went through. So that would be the first place. You've got to be very clear about what it is that you want to write about. And then we were talking earlier on about rabbit holes. Stick to that because it is very easy to then find rabbit holes, to disappear off down. What's it they call it in the military? Mission creep. It's very easy to get caught up with a bad case of mission creep, if you have the focus on that. And then it's where am I gonna get the information from for this? Is there stuff out there? Is there published sources or unpublished sources? Where else can I get the information to pull this together? And then think about how you're gonna structure the story and so on. So that's the kind of just get you off the starting blocks at that point."
