Cannabis has been legal in New York State for just over 5 years and in that time, it has overtaken acetaminophen as the most common cause of poisoning in children. According to a state Department of Health study released in May, cannabis related trips to the emergency room increased substantially during the time period between 2016 and 2024, almost doubling. In 2023, there were 42 youngsters treated in emergency rooms for cannabis poisoning, 14 in Herkimer County and 7 in Otsego County. Recommendations by the Department of Health as a result of this study says to minimize unintentional exposure of cannabis to children, reduce the risk by safe storage of edibles and other similar cannabis products the kids could think are safe snacks.
