"What do we mean by class politics? So basically, you know, what we mean by class politics is that fundamental structure of our economy is built on the exploitation of labor by capital. And take even a very milder vision of what that exploitation of labor by capital is. You can't sell something unless you sell it for greater than the price of the labor invested in it. That's what it means to make a profit. The functioning of our economy, when it functions best, is actually exploitative for the working class. You don't get profit without the labor of the working class. Your interests and the people who you work for interests are in certain respects fundamentally opposed. That doesn't mean you can't read, that there aren't good bosses, doesn't mean you can't reach agreements which are helpful, but it means that in a certain sense, you all faculty, whatever they were teaching, whatever their relative positions were, more or less privileged, more or less highly paid, whatever their sexual identities were, whatever their racial identities were, in relation to management, in relation to the basic structure of their job, we all stood in exactly the same position. So then someone says, yeah, but faculty, that's one thing, you're still not working class. You see, yeah, there are obvious ways, culturally, in which one are working class, but I'm not so interested in the cultural question, I'm not interested in class as an identity. What we're interested in is class as a structural position, where basically it's wage labor. You get paid for what you do, and most of us can't control, we get paid for what we do."
