Will the results of the 2026 Michigan midterms determine the 2028 presidential election? Curtis Hertel, Michigan Democratic Party chair, explains why Michigan is "the tip of the spear" for the fight for America.

"So, this is the first time in Michigan history that we have an open governor's race, open U.S. Senate race, open attorney general, open secretary of state. Every seat in the state house, the state senate, enough competitive seats that we can flip Congress right through Michigan, and I think that this is a challenge but an opportunity. And, you know, we have the opportunity to really be the tip of the spear, the response to what's happening in this country. And really, if you want to win the presidency in 2028, we got to win all these races in Michigan. You know, if we don't have an attorney general that's suing Donald Trump and trying to make sure that we can protect our elections, same as the secretary of state, so we have actual free elections, a governor that's going to make sure that the voting laws that we've passed to protect our right to votes here are intact and to win a legislature that, you know, I don't want just the governor's office. That's a goalie. I want to be able to go on offense and get things done for people. And so we have to take the state house back. We're down three seats. We hold the state Senate by one. I mean, everything in Michigan is competitive. And the work that we're doing on the ground in organizing and rebuilding I always say the Michigan Democratic Party, we don't we don't pay consultants. We don't buy ads. We are the backbone, the, you know, the people that are actually doing the work on the ground, which I think is really more important in today's elections to be honest with you. I think door to door, hand to hand canvassing and listening is more important than a lot of the things we focus on in politics. So that all that work that is being done right now is being done to build towards it, but we have one of the latest primaries in the country. Yeah, we have, you know, we have competitive primaries. We don't get to know where candidates are till the first week of August. And so we got a lot of work to do, but I feel good about what we're building here in Michigan."
