"These are crazy people who are advocating against what I call the three P's. Prison, police, and prison, police, and private property. They don't want any of those things, and those are the ideals that founded this great country 250 years ago. That's four P's, Carolyn. So that was White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt making one of her most common mistakes. She opened her mouth. This time to say that the United States was founded on three things in her opinion, police, prisons, and private property. Carolyn, the three concepts you're looking for are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Not quite the same as police and prisons, but certainly accurate for the direction that the Republican Party has taken. Also, the idea that police and prisons are somehow foundational ideals to the creation of the United States is absolutely insane. The first police department dates back to 1838 in Boston, more than 50 years after the Declaration of Independence. Before then, there were sheriffs, which were part of the British colonial office, so not really the most American example, and slave patrols. Maybe that's what she was referring to. And prisons? Foundational American values? As a reminder to Carolyn, the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution mention prisons as an abuse. The concept of due process, trial by jury, the right to a speedy process, the Fourth and the Eighth Amendment, they all restrict the power of the government to use prisons. If you think that that makes prisons foundational, you might want to re-read the Constitution. Although you do have a point when you talk about the importance of prisons, because the United States is the fifth most imprisoned population in the world. Second only two countries like Rwanda, Cuba, and El Salvador. One thing is sure, rewriting history is what the Trump administration does best."
