"250 years ago, General George Washington crossed the Delaware River, changing the course of American history. Today, we're crossing Delaware County. When America declared its independence in 1776, Ohio was still part of the frontier. Just a few decades later, Moses Bixby helped establish the community that would become Delaware, laying the foundation for Delaware County and its place in the growing history of our nation. For more than two centuries, Delaware County has grown from frontier settlements into one of Ohio's most vibrant communities. Through it all, a tradition of public service has prevailed. One that dates back to Solomon D. Smith, Delaware County's first sheriff in 1808. While our mission looks somewhat different than it did 218 years ago, we're still committed to protecting our community, serving our neighbors, and preserving the freedoms that generations of Americans worked to build. As America celebrates 250 years of independence, we're honored to serve the people of Delaware County and carry forward the values that helped shape our nation."
