America - Shining City on the Hill? Beacon of freedom to the whole world? Or an empire built on whyte supremacy, g3n0cide, and sl4v3ry? Yes. Both. America contains multitudes and we reflected upon that - and all the past week's news - on her 250th anniversary.

"multitudes, right? Trump using lots of his big Fourth of July speeches over the last couple nights to talk about how great America is and how we'll always be on top and to call us social democrats, to David's point, he called us communists, right? When really, I think what folks like us progressives are trying to do, Katie, is to really take those founding words to their logical conclusion and actually embody those ideas that were put on paper. But, you know, we talk about the long arc of history, bending toward justice, and it makes it seem as if it bends by itself. And it has always been people doing the bending, folks like the abolitionist movement, like the women's suffrage movement, like the gay rights movement. And it has been uneven and slow and there have been setbacks. And I think we're in the midst of a very serious setback right now. Katie, I think I want to leave you with this, like America contains multitudes. It is all of these things, right? Mm-hmm. Yeah, it is. It's all of these things. It's all of the people. America is the way it is. And America is so great for these reasons. It's the people. It's the people. It's the differences. It's the diversity. It's the shared experience that we all bring to the table. That is what makes America America. Like he was talking about, David was talking about Ronald Reagan and how he said, you can't go to France and become French. You can't go to China and become Chinese. You can't go to Japan and become Japanese, but you can come to America and become an American. And that is like so, it has just been so lost on so many people that that is what literally makes us great, are all of the difference in the diversity that we have with all of each other. And that is what has brought the activists together over time. It's the different experiences that all of them bring to the table that have been able to make those movements that they were doing work and to get the result that it needed to get eventually. And it's just, my dad calls me a communist all the time. I'm used to it. So I'm like, whatever. I don't care. But when it's the president of the United States and I literally am just like, I just want human rights. Like I just want, I just want people to be treated like people I want. And it's something Martin Luther King Jr. said was live up to what you said on paper. I want America to live up to the ideals that they said on paper. And that is what I want. And that is what I think a majority of people want."
