India Becomes a Core Source of Fentanyl Precursor Chemicals in Large-Scale Smuggling Between the US and Mexico
"The BBC went undercover in a pharmaceutical factory in India that makes this drug, Tafrador, an addictive opioid mixed with a muscle relaxant. The team were led here by a clue picked up on the other side of the world. It's an addict who has taken the drugs. A local task force raided a neighborhood searching for drug dealers. Tafrador looks like a medicine but it's used as a street drug. The BBC found these pills all over West Africa, in Côte d'Ivoire, in Ghana, in Nigeria. The packet reveals a logo of a company called Evio Pharmaceuticals based in India. Posing as international opioid dealers, the BBC met one of its directors, Vinod Sharma. By shipping Tafrador to Ghana, Evio is breaking Indian law. We put these allegations to Vinod Sharma and Evio Pharmaceuticals. They did not respond. The Indian drugs regulator, the CDSCO, said the country's drug regulatory system is strong and strict action would be taken against any pharmaceutical firm involved in malpractice."
