"The National Center for Biotechnology is a basic research center that is part of the Spanish National Research Council and our scientific mission is aligned with the World Health Organization, One Health Initiative. Some of the scientific challenges we address include infection disease, inflammation and cancer. The CNB has an animal research service that provides the framework for carrying out this research and for the creation of new genetically altered animal models. Most of our animals are genetically altered mice. In addition to providing genetically modified mice, the center is promoting the use of new alternative methods in research, LAMS. To this end, an expert in alternative methods was incorporated into the body responsible for reviewing animal research projects, which provide advice to researchers in the search for LAMS. At this time, we are launching a new initiative to share surplus animal tissues. As a main measure to promote the use of LAMS, we will propose that whenever animals are used for tissue collection, the remaining tissue must be offered to the broader group of researchers who use animals. There are simply low-cost measures that facilitate the implementation of alternative methods and the reduction of animal use. LAMS are not opposite to animal research, but are complementary to it."
