"beautiful immaculate work. And so when people talk about brutalism, they're actually talking about the hand that touches. It's a rough cast piece. And standing beside this thing, I don't think I need to say more. This is a piece of pre-cast. And John, where's John? That guy was the project architect for this building. And if you want to learn how to pour concrete, I think you talk to him. Because there's all kinds of methods of how you get the wood grain to read in the concrete. And every, if you walk around this building, there's so many different treatments of concrete that are immense. And the idea behind that was to get people to think about a plastic material that was not expensive material. You didn't have to build a major public building out of granite or other noble materials. You could use concrete and you could do whatever form you wanted. So it was amazingly liberating. I'm John Snell. I worked with Ray Mamoriamma for 32 years. And the first major project that I worked with him was the Ontario Science Centre. And as a result of my experience there, I became a principal in the firm and enjoyed all those years of producing many fine buildings. Well, actually, prior to the opening, I remember very clearly the night before the opening, I went to the site. And then this was probably 10 or 11 o'clock at night. And they were making final preparations per hand over the building. The inspectors were there. And I went in one of the main buildings, or one of the main rooms in the orientation building. And they at that point made a test for various things. An enormous number of lights flashed on. And I was very impressed by this thinking this was just the right thing for it. But it turned out that in fact, everyone indicated a fault. And so therefore, the rest of the night was quite busy correcting all these faults, faults ready for the opening the next day. However, it was successful. And I've forgotten how many thousand people came to that opening, but it was a very large number that first day. And we, that is Ray, and his wife Sachi, and myself and my wife Jennifer were sitting in the sitting in the front row. We have a photograph taken on that occasion showing us and much my interest. Bill Dennison, the mayor at the time, is sitting right behind us."
