ICYMI, Western governors met behind closed doors to discuss Colorado River negotiations: www.fox13now.com/news/colorad... #utpol #Utah
"We did meet to talk about the Colorado River and what it would take to get a deal. I'm Ben Winslow at Deer Valley. The governors from all over the West have been meeting here where they've been discussing a number of issues, including the Colorado River. They still have hope for an agreement that affects 40 million people. I think we left pretty hopeful that there's work being done right now. The discussions are ongoing. The governors of some of the states along the Colorado River met behind closed doors to try to make progress on who gets what out of the mighty river that provides life for seven states and a portion of Mexico. Governor Spencer Cox signaled an appetite to take a deal offered by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. There seems to be an opportunity for a shorter time frame, a framework with maybe reviews every two years where we can actually get something done and not be in court, not be in front of a judge, which we're hopeful for, Ben. And so that's where we're all aligned. The upper basin states are aligned. It's all going to tell the upper basin to move over. While there are still areas of disagreement, Governor Joe Lombardo believes they can find a solution. Governor Cox hit the nail on the head. We do not want to be in litigation. The stakes have never been higher as demand for water from the Colorado River is exceeding supply. A dismal winter and impacts from diversion and a changing climate are affecting every state and the entire Colorado River system could be headed for a crash. As everybody knows, there's an issue between the upper basin and the lower basin. It's a matter of efficiency, availability, resources, and the authority of the federal government in the decision making process. Water is being released from Flaming Gorge to prop up Lake Powell and keep it generating power for millions. That might not be enough. Glen Canyon Dam could cease to generate power by the end of this year. There will be cascading effects up and down the river. We're running out of time, but the conversation is continuing. It's not at a stalemate. Now, the current agreements governing the Colorado River, they expire in October. At Deer Valley, Ben Winslow, FOX 13 News, Utah."
