"One of the worst things about being Druze is the mustache game. I mean, look at these! How am I ever going to compete? Try as I might, I can never get a mustache as glorious as these. Another one of the worst things is the accusation of having sympathies with Zionism and collaboration. Now of course, I do know where these accusations come from, especially from the historic role that the Druze communities in 48 Palestine played in the foundation of the State of Israel, as well as the recent developments in the southern Syrian province of Sweda. But of course, these tendencies do not apply to all Druze people. And as an anti-Zionist Druze myself, this has been a very frustrating thing that I've had to confront. But before I get into it, hello. I'm politically depressed, and in celebrating the one year anniversary of my YouTube channel, I've decided to make a video every day to cover all eight of the video essays I've made in the last year. And today I'm going to talk to you a little bit about my second video essay, Everything You'll Ever Need to Know About the Druze. This video was by far my longest, coming up at about 1 hour 40 minutes. And the reason it needed to be so long was because, well, there's a lot. What I cover in that video is the religion, the history, and the politics. I've definitely noticed that on YouTube, there really are only videos about those first two, but very little about the politics and the political history of the Druze across the Bilad al-Sham region. So I wanted that video to be a resource that examines all of these levels at once. I also wanted to share my personal experiences as a Druze person. And that personal perspective is definitely lacking on YouTube. We're only about two million people the world over. The main two reasons that compelled me to make this video was, one, the sectarian discourse against the Druze in Syria, and the accusations of the Druze as a whole as being Zionists. And so by examining the history of the role of the Druze in Syria, in Lebanon, and in Palestine, I think I demonstrate a much more complex picture. For instance, one of the leading anti-Zionist figures in the region, as well as anti-imperialist figure, was Sultan Pasha al-Atrash. Likewise, one of the main allies of Palestinian groups in Lebanon was Kamal Jumblatt, another Druze political leader. These two figures were also deeply embedded within the national struggle of their respective country.
