UK cocoa imports in 2025 equate to 2,000 hectares of deforested land in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana, yet due diligence rules remain unimplemented despite the 2021 Environment Act. #commoditymarkets #cocoa
"As somebody who loves chocolate, I hesitate to say this, but our love of the stuff is actually contributing to environmental degradation. Looking just at one country, the United Kingdom, in just one year, 2025, the cocoa imports are equivalent to about 2000 hectares of deforested land, primarily in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. Now, the UK is aware of this and actually trying to do something about it, having passed the 2021 Environment Act. The trouble is, it has yet to implement the due diligence rules, which are what is necessary to enable the UK to enforce the legislation. So without these regulations in place, even sustainable labels are under fire. Good news is that major brands, which includes Ferrero and the Hershey Company, have come together in the UK to form the UK Coco Coalition in order to support this type of legislation and align with the stricter EU standards that hopefully will help us maintain a sustainable cocoa supply chain."
