"There's one thing to remember if you're taking a flight this summer, and that is if you're delayed or your flight is cancelled, you're usually entitled to a fixed amount of compensation, typically a minimum of about £200 per person. So let's do your rights in turn. First of all, delayed. The crucial thing here is do you arrive over three hours after when you were supposed to? If you do, then the fixed compensation is in place if it meets two criteria. First is are you on a UK or EU regulated flight? That's defined as any flight leaving a UK or EU airport or any flight arriving at a UK or EU airport as long as it's a UK or EU airline. To give you an example, London to New York, always covered. New York to London on KLM, a Dutch airline, covered. New York to London on American Airlines, an American airline, not covered. The second criteria is it must be the airline's fault, that delay has to be caused by them, and usually most things are with the exception of bad weather or a problem with the airport, not the airline, that stops you going on time. Now if your flight is cancelled, if it's a UK or EU regulated flight, then you're always entitled to a choice between a full refund or being put on the next available flight, but you might be due fixed compensation here too. And that fixed compensation depends on when the cancellation was and the timing of the alternative flight you're offered even if you don't take that flight. So as for when it was cancelled, well, the flight must have been cancelled for you to be due compensation within two weeks of you due to be flying. And the alternative flight you're offered even if you don't take it, if that is taking off either more than two hours before or after four hours afterwards, then you're likely due compensation. And if your flight is cancelled with less than a week to go, well then those time periods are squeezed. The most important thing I would say though is you don't have to remember the exact rules, just the principles. I've got full guides on moneysavingexpert.com into flight delays and flight cancellations, the exact rules including free template letters you can send off to the airline. So if you are going away it might be worth a bookmarking those now, so that when you're sitting on the plane gnashing your teeth, I'm eight hours late, you suddenly go Ah, they might owe me some money for this."
