The Prince Rupert’s Drop Original post

🎤 Whisper Transcript (en) ⏱ 69s

"How terrifying is the Prince Rupert's drop? You can smash it with a hammer or even eight stones, and no matter how you strike or smash it, it won't shatter in the slightest. Even if you shoot it with the most powerful rifle, the bullet will shatter before the drop does. In fact, the Prince Rupert's drop is made from the most ordinary glass. After being melted at high temperatures, it naturally drips into ice water by gravity and cools to form this tadpole-shaped glass droplet, commonly known as the Prince Rupert's drop. Once formed, this glass exhibits remarkable physical properties, being harder than ordinary glass. Under the immense pressure of a hydraulic press, it remains incredibly tough, showing no signs of shattering even under continuous force. The most astonishing thing is that it can withstand up to 20 tonnes of pressure and even cause serious damage to the hydraulic press. However, everything in the world has its weaknesses. For example, if you use pliers to clamp the tail of the Prince Rupert's drop and apply a little force, it will completely shatter."
