Spoke Media on TikTok: Ontario has some of the worst healthcare in the country, yet Doug Ford's government just cut hundreds of nurses and healthcare professionals. ☹️ #OntarioHealthcareCrisis #DougFordCuts #ProtectOurNurses #PrivatizationThreat #HealthcareForAll
"Doug Ford is sabotaging Ontario's healthcare. The Ontario Nursing Association has announced that the province is cutting hundreds of healthcare jobs, including nurses, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare practitioners. Now you might say, but I thought we were in a healthcare crisis. We are. You might say, I thought people were dying while waiting for healthcare. They are. This is on purpose. Healthcare in Ontario is some of the worst in the country. All of these graphs are from 2022, but things have just gotten worse. Spending per capita in Ontario is the second worst in the country. Funding for hospitals is the worst in the country. The number of hospital beds is the third worst in the country. And funding for all of this in the 2026-2027 budget is technically increasing, but at a rate far below what it would take to just keep things as they are. Healthcare funding is increasing by less than a percent, but it's estimated that it would need to increase by at least 4% per year in order to maintain service levels. So why is this happening? Because Doug Ford wants to push Ontario towards a two-tiered healthcare system, one that is publicly funded and one that is privately funded, and that you pay for the healthcare out of pocket. Now the really fun thing about this is you may picture a private healthcare system being that you, as a rich person, want a surgery and you don't want to wait, so you go to a private clinic and you pay from all of the money that you have and you get fancy healthcare and it's great. And that might happen, but the much more probable outcome is that you need a surgery and so you get referred to a private clinic that is covered by OHIP, so you still don't pay anything. However, every single time that this has happened across the country, that private clinics have been contracted out to do work that was previously done in hospitals, it costs taxpayers more because you are going to a private clinic that is funded by OHIP that is a for-profit clinic. So of course it is going to cost more money for the taxpayer. Not to mention that outcomes are often worse. At the same time, hospitals who have to lay off hundreds of nurses, like what is happening right now, then turn to private nursing staffing agencies, which, you guessed it, cost way more for the taxpayer and have worse results. If you are talking about efficient use of government spending or patient outcomes, there is no good reason to privatize healthcare. The only reasons are corporate profit and government corruption. So now not only are your healthcare outcomes going to be worse, are your wait times going to be longer in Ontario, but the tax dollars that you are spending on healthcare will be less efficient because they won't be going to simply providing healthcare for you, they're going to make executives and healthcare companies a lot of money while you maybe die waiting for healthcare."
