"We are watching the most brutal stage of Israel's genocide against Palestinians. Sarah Schwartz has been a vocal advocate for Palestinian people and critical of Israel's actions in Gaza. She says it's led her to face abuse online from both neo-Nazis and fellow Jews. These are messages that refer to me as self-hating, as a traitor. There have been memes circulated about me which contain images of me as a rat. There's often Nazi references, images of me with a yellow star of the type that Jews were forced to wear in Nazi Germany. Schwartz co-leads the Jewish Council of Australia, a progressive group formed in 2024, to represent non-Zionist Jews in Australia. She says it's led her Jewishness to be called into question. The Holocaust has been such a foundational lesson for me and something that is really the motivation in many ways why I engage in Palestine solidarity work. I was taught that never again meant never again for anyone. Schwartz told the Commission that the abuse she suffered led to her taking time off work over concerns for her safety. The E-Safety Commissioner also gave testimony saying social media companies have dragged their feet. We fought hard against X in terms of not allowing that post-mortem bondi content. They said it's not any worse than you would see in a gore movie. These are mainstream platforms that are fighting for the right and ability to distribute and monetise this content. Earlier this week, the Royal Commission had heard that Meta, Google, LinkedIn and TikTok had engaged meaningfully with the investigation into online anti-Semitism. While X and Telegram hadn't responded."
