"After slavery ended, black culture is a form of black gold where they extracted wealth. Many people don't know the banjo is the national instrument of this country as it has been for, I think, almost a century. But it comes from Africa. And that's an African. It's an African issue. And imagine country music, bluegrass, and other genres that we don't think of as black without the banjo. You know, it can actually go back to the days of when we were enslaved. So we weren't free to, you know, go to certain stores and do other things, even learn how to read and learn other things, but we could freely express ourselves in a limited form. And I think that's why black music specifically just has this really powerful, like ancestral connection because even today, when you hear hip hop and jazz and other stuff, it's a continuation of this freedom that we're living. And some of the stuff we're saying on these records, we might not feel free enough to say it in other places, you know?"
