"It's a scorcher and America is turning 250 years old, despite this president in Congress doing all it can to undermine American values. I want to spend this time talking on this run about all the things I love about our country. So why don't you come run with me? Our Declaration of Independence says we hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and a pursuit of happiness. The idea of all men being equal, the idea that we would form government together, that is a uniquely American thing transmitted to the world and something to be proud of this 250th. Of course, that franchise didn't extend to all Americans. Why? The suffrage movement, the civil rights movement are one of the things that makes me proud to be an American, even as this administration tries to roll them back. Loving America is about loving our capitalist system too, which has created more wealth for more people, brought more people out of poverty than any other economic system in the history of the world. Of course, capitalism has its excesses, which is why one of the things that makes me proud to be an American is the labor movement. Whether it's the five-day work week, ending childhood labor, making sure we have fair working conditions. That labor movement has been so important to lifting up so many. And one of the things we need to keep fighting for in America, whether it is getting us out of the Great Depression and lifting Americans out of poverty or fighting back against COVID, the development of vaccine. One of the things that makes me proud to be an American and we should celebrate this 250th birthday is the power of our government when it puts its mind to something. Heck, we put a ban on the moon. How cool is that? One of the things that makes this administration so terrible is that it primarily spends its time thinking about how to wrench Trump and his cronies and his family. But when we put our mind to it, whether it is doing so much to eradicate hunger in the world, whether it is freeing Europe, whether it is standing as a beacon of liberty and freedom or even creating the national highway system.
