Japan's 100 year plan 🏆 @JimmyConrad discusses Japan's World Cup and Asia Cup journey 🇯🇵

🎤 Whisper Transcript (en) ⏱ 125s

"Yeah, I want to talk about Japan. In 1992, they made a 100-year plan to win the World Cup by 2092. And they hadn't even qualified for the World Cup yet. Talk about, you know, looking ahead to that. They hadn't even qualified for the World Cup yet. So they qualified for the first time in 1998, and they've been in every World Cup since. Okay, they moved it up. In 2005, they said, hey, we're doing well. Our domestic league is thriving, the J-League. We're going to win it by 2050. And that's where they're at now. My concern for Japan is, yes, they have qualified for every World Cup since 1998, but they've never won a knockout round game. Now, we watch them playing, like, that's a team that can run with anybody, but they still haven't gotten results when it matters the most. And as much as they've won more Asian Cups than anybody else, they haven't won one since 2011. So for me to be like, hey, you want to win a World Cup, you got to win your regional tournament first. And they haven't done that for 15 years. So they have to start to exert some more dominance in their region before I think they can really start to tackle the World Cup itself. I love the ambition, but a 100-year plan they have being qualified for a World Cup. I love that. That's what we're planning, and we're going to try to make it happen. So I'm very curious about how it continues to evolve. They're clearly in a good position. They have players playing all over the world, a lot of them in Europe now. I think they could have had a roster this year. They could have gotten 26 players, all from European clubs. And that's a sign of their growth and continued development in the trust that they're earning from big European clubs to go with Japanese players. But yeah, it's interesting. But ultimately, they need to start winning this with more regularity for me to really consider them as contenders for a World Cup. And it truly did come down to the wire when they were taking on Brazil in the game that they were eliminated. They were almost there. They were there. There's so many bright spots. There's so much progress. Yeah, that's a good point. I need whoever is on that planning committee to help me plan my life. I don't even know five minutes down the line what I'm doing, let alone 100 years. That's awesome. Yeah, that's pretty cool."
