"Hey, Brian here. Glad you were riding along. Hopefully we learned something together, or at least kill some time. This is Lee Street East, in the east end of Charleston, and I know this block. Not from childhood, I grew up down in Beckley. The east end is where I landed when I came up to Charleston at 21, the first place I ever called mine in this city. Street lights coming on, that orange wash on brick that the daytime never quite shows you. Charleston's the capital, and it sits right where the elk pours into the canal, two rivers folding into one downtown that you can feel even when you can't see the water. The east side keeps its own hours, it doesn't dress up for you. Downtown's a few blocks west, the capital dome catching light a little further down the river. But back here it's just the grid, the porches, the cars settled in for the night. These were my streets for a while. I'm not going to romanticize it. It's working light, not pretty light. But at this hour, it tells the truth about itself. Thank you for riding with me. We are in this together. Keep going."
