About as close to the Kentucky line as you can get without crossing it. Orby Cantrell was a state lawmaker out of these coal fields. 30 years in the House of Delegates down in Richmond. Longest serving man in the legislature by the time he died in office. And somewhere along the way, they put his name on this road. I keep thinking about what it meant to get a road named after you in a place like this. Not a statue, not a building, a road. Because the road was the thing. These communities were cut off from everything for most of their history. And a highway appropriation wasn't a ribbon cutting, it was survival. I don't know Almyra well. This is still new territory for me. Edge of the map I'm still filling in. But I'll tell you what. The country up here doesn't ask your opinion of it. Thank you for riding with me.
