"It's not that you can't joke around, it's not that you can't tease each other, it's not that you can't have a friendly work environment where there's engagement and joking and dark humor. We actually know that those things are protective. It's part of what makes the fire service so resilient and firefighters so resilient. But you have to pay attention to are you crossing the line? Are you staying and doing things that people find offensive or doing something that makes them feel like they're not part of the group? Are you excluding people? And you also have to think through are the things that you're doing, if you were to put them on paper and the city council was to know about it, would they find them acceptable? And if the answer is yes, OK, go for it. If the answer is no, you need to reevaluate that a little bit, because we're also living in a time when you don't know who's filming what, when you don't know who's listening in. And you just have to be careful, you have to be thoughtful. Absolutely joke around, absolutely have fun at work. That's part of the beauty of being in the fire service. But you just have to pay attention to the line and have open and honest conversations with your crews about where that line is. And if you're crossing it, if someone's being bullied, if someone's being harassed, step in and say something, because ultimately it makes it better for everyone."
