"Isn't your family history a problem for you, if you want to play that role? No, not at all. Why not? Because millions of Iranians chanted my name, my family name, and my father's name that is tattooed on the hand of people who actually were in the January 8th and 9th massacre. I know that there are certain people who like to fall to a narrative that has been pitched to them by the propaganda of my arch enemies. But the reality on the streets in Iran is different. I'm proud of my heritage. I'm proud of the track record. Of every part of the heritage? The first thing my father would go down in Iranian history as one of the best leaders Iran ever had operating under difficult circumstances during the Cold War. I'm not saying everything is perfect. Can you name one thing that you condemn? I would say that the rapidity of economic development was not necessarily coupled with the rate of liberalisation, not that it was not sought, but again I need to remind you that we are talking about the 50s, the 60s, the 70s. But you're talking about the economy, not about executions, not about Savak, not about torture? Again, I would refer you to people who have written on that. Now what am I asking you? I am personally against capital punishment, but it's not my call. But you understand why I ask these questions, because your critics are critical about the fact whether or not you have broken with autocracy. Of course I have. Look, my position is very clear."
