OTD in Blue Bombers History July 9, 1988 GM Cal Murphy releases Schenley Award winning RB Willard Reaves. The CFL was in financial difficulties and team budgets were slashed leading to salaries being reduced. Reaves and Murphy couldn’t come to terms on and so Reaves was let go
"I have no bitter taste in my mouth. The people here treated me really well, especially the football team from when Paul Robinson was first here until now and Cal. He still treated me right, but you have to know that Cal is in a very difficult situation and there was no other way around it. With the salary cap, it's something he had to do. The salary cap was put on to try to save the league. The league is in a very bad position right now and the board of governors gave him a budget to work with and he had to keep within that budget."
