"the third-best all-around scorer. Now, a quick glance would tell you that the Italian women won zero Olympic medals between that 1928 team silver and Vanessa Ferrari in Tokyo, but that overlooks a lot because, you know, anytime you're trying to talk about the history of women's sports, it's not the history of who was the best, it's the history of who was allowed to be rewarded for what they were doing in the cultural confines of a specific era. So Laura McKaylee left the London Olympics with no medals because the team didn't place well and they didn't give individual medals to women. They just gave individual medals to the men, but the women didn't get any individual medals. But if they had, she would have had an all-around bronze and a rings bronze. And then after 1948, her best event was eliminated because her best event was rings. And they were like, oh yeah, that's not ladylike enough, women can't do rings anymore."
