🚨EXCLUSIVE: Two Democratic candidates for Wisconsin governor skipped a forum after learning they'd be asked about Israel and Gaza. Their empty chairs became a symbol of who showed up for Wisconsin's Muslim community. @jtcestkowski.bsky.social has the full report on YouTube ⬇️
"Democrats are refusing to learn the lessons of Kamala Harris's 2024 defeat, especially as it relates to the genocide in Gaza. Two Democrats running right now in Wisconsin's gubernatorial election for 2026, one of the most crucial swing states in the entire country, skipped a candidate forum after they learned they would be asked about the genocide in Gaza. Those candidates were Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley and current Lieutenant Governor Sarah Rodriguez. The Wisconsin Muslim Civic Alliance spent weeks developing questions for this forum. Some of these campaigns got a look at the questions and asked that there be changes made to the forum so they could give more nuanced answers because they were going to get asked if Israel's actions in Gaza were a genocide and if they would repeal a state law that is all about trying to get U.S. money divested from Israeli companies and the Israeli government. But even after these changes to the forum, still, Sarah Rodriguez and David Crowley did not attend. Their chairs at the forum were left empty as a reminder to the attendees of who was willing to show up for Wisconsin's Muslim community and who was not. People who did attend were Mandela Barnes, Representative Francesca Hong, who's running as a Democratic Socialist, as well as Kelda Royce, who is a current state senator. I reached out to both the Rodriguez and Crowley campaigns. The Rodriguez campaign said that they were going to give me a statement at first and then went radio silent. The Crowley campaign actually ended. David Crowley dropped out of the race and endorsed, yeah, you guessed it, Sarah Rodriguez. But I think one of the event's moderators summed it up best when he said this. I think it's important for our community to know who shows up and who doesn't. So Sarah Rodriguez didn't show up and David Crowley didn't show up and I think that says a lot."
