Over 400 people were arrested in Newport Beach, California after large-scale disorder broke out during Independence Day celebrations.
"some more breaking news to get to right now. Police in Newport Beach now say they arrested more than 400 people on Fourth of July. About half of them, they say, in a single incident in the Balboa Peninsula last night, police released these photos of the chaos. They say a large number of young people swarmed the area, and then they say things quickly spiraled out of control. Fireworks blocked roads, fights and a pavilions grocery store looted. Police say some people launched fireworks into the crowds and at police officers. One officer was struck by one of those mortars. More than 350 officers responded to this scene and eventually we're able to clear that area. So unfortunately, when I'm trying to look up the demographics of who was arrested of these teens, they didn't publish that information yet. There was about 402 people arrested. Now this is a sharp increase. There was only 60 people arrested in the previous year. So a lot of people just came here to cause chaos. They weren't from here. So there was some data released though, and that data did show that they were mainly males and likely most of them were not from Newport Beach. And that's something that we already thought was the case. We thought that they weren't from the area and the limited release that we are getting shows that that's true. A lot of them are from out of state. They're from the Los Angeles area. And keep in mind that they have a massive, illegal population. Only a small percentage of them were locals. And if we take a look at just some of the people that were doing the looting and stuff like that in the official videos that were released, well, I mean, yeah, these are the people that were there. So again, this is the crowd right here that was on the beach during the main confrontation and it looks incredibly diverse for Newport Beach."
