Big reduction time claims by Queensland Health Minister Tim Nicholls on ramping and emergency patients waiting longer than 24hrs. (OL Steven Miles was shown as if he was going to speak on the hospital construction delays for the Olympics but Ch9 cut away). #qldpol
"There are fresh signs of recovery in the state's struggling health system tonight. Exclusive new data showing improvements in both ramping and hospital performance. But the Health Minister concedes there's more to be done to heal our health crisis. It's the season of sickness when the system suffers. But there are signs this season won't be as bad as the last. This is now the eighth month in a row where the ramping number has a three in front of it. That's a record that has not been seen since January 2001. Exclusive data shows ramping for the month of May at 35.5% up from 34.5% in April. A slight increase but better than May of last year. $100,000 every fortnight is being saved in overtime payments and 1,000 hours of fortnight for our paramedics who are not having to work overtime, who can finish their shift on time. The Minister also pleased with progress on the number of patients waiting more than 24 hours in emergency. Down 66% since a controversial new directive linking performance with hospital funding. What it has influenced I suppose is a whole of hospital ownership of moving a patient from the emergency department onto the ward for their ongoing management. Reducing the number of patients waiting longer than 24 hours is a positive step forward. But returning to the national four hour standard will be impossible while Queensland hospitals remain at or near capacity. Not helped says the Labor opposition by delays to new hospital beds. The 24 hours is as we say a never event but it's not the final goalpost. We're not putting up the victory sign by any stage. There's a lot more work to be done."
