America’s founding story can’t be told without Black women.

🎤 Whisper Transcript (en) ⏱ 50s

"Name. I want a name. OK, I need a name of a single black woman that had something to do with America's founding. Go. Benny Johnson, the MAGA YouTuber, is trying to rewrite history and dismiss the black woman who helped shaped America's founding. But Benny, what about Elizabeth Freeman? After hearing that the Massachusetts Constitution said all men are born free and equal, she sued for her freedom in 1781 won and helped end slavery in Massachusetts. Or the writer Phyllis Wheatley Peters as the first African American to publish a book of poetry. She praised liberty while calling out the hypocrisy of slavery. Or we could use Sarah Mapp's Douglas as an example, who opened a school for black children in Philadelphia and helped move forward the founding era's promises of liberty and equality by giving black children access to education and opportunity. Of course, there's hundreds more that weren't written about in history books. Their stories were scrubbed so Whiteman could take center stage in our founding story, and Benny Johnson is trying to erase them all over again."
