🎬 New Zealand understood the assignment

🎤 Whisper Transcript (en) ⏱ 158s

"England lost this series and I think the best way to tell that story is actually even though England self-sabotaged and all this drama off the field and everything else I think the best way to tell the story is actually through three maybe even four of the best innings that New Zealand played. So the first one is Glenn Phillips at the Oval where he counterattacks he puts pressure back on England and then Joffre Archer does a spell and Glenn Phillips plays a couple of attacking shots but he doesn't try and get out of this magnificent spell by hooking or by uppercutting or by reverse ramping or whatever the hell a lot of England players would do. He does it mostly by leaving ducking weaving falling on the floor it's still performative like it's there's a huge performance going on there it's very Glenn Phillips but he wins that little battle by not playing a shot. I'm not sure an England batter would have done that. Then you got Ratcham Ravindra who on a couple of occasions got off to decent starts and England pulled him back and they did it by bowling really defensive and dry. I think in their Trent Bridge innings they had a 7-2 field bowling miles outside of stump and basically you're eventually going to chase one of these and he just didn't and so he got through to stumps and then he got through to basically lunch the next day and iced the match by doing so right. He's a naturally attacking player he likes to hit the ball but in that situation he was like you know what if they're just going to tire themselves out I'm going to let them do that and then I'll play my shots later on. And then the third one is Daryl Mitchell who outside of Ben Stokes I don't know if there's another England player who would be willing to be hit on the body as much as Daryl Mitchell for his cause. Now Joe Root doesn't really bat in that way so I don't think he's a fair example of that kind of player but I think the other English players if they were in a situation where the ball was doing what it was Daryl Mitchell might have batted in some of the toughest points of this game as far as physically and he just kept putting his body on the line and putting his body on the line you know for the team and he didn't play any attacking shots. Now Daryl Mitchell plays attacking shots we've all seen him hit sixes and whack the ball everywhere and yet in this game he decided to take the ball on the body over and over again. In all three of those situations I could see a situation well 100% I could see how an England player would just play a bunch of attacking shots to make the thing stop and I think what New Zealand have shown is that's just more than one way of doing it those are probably three of the more attacking players that New Zealand have and yet they have other parts to their game and you look at the England players and so often you say yes they do the attacking stuff, yes they are incredible ball strikers but do they understand when to use it?"
