"Let me address something about medical transportation and end-of-life care that the industry almost never discusses publicly. Hospice patients, patients returning home after terminal diagnoses, patients in the final stages of serious illness, these patients ride in our vehicles. The emotional environment of those trips is unlike anything else in this work. After 20 years, I've had drivers come back from a trip visibly affected by what they experienced and companies that don't have any framework for processing that emotional impact are doing their drivers a disservice. Peer support, supervisor check-ins after difficult transports, and explicit training around emotionally complex patient situations are not soft benefits.
