A gay White Sox fan has shared a story of when he and his partner were harassed while watching a game, showing why Pride Nights are so important for LGBTQ+ fans. Billy Nesnidal posted the video to his social media.
"I put my arm around Paul and after less than a minute or so, maybe 30 seconds, I hear someone yell, disgusting, gross. We don't want to see that here. A few minutes later, I turned to Paul and gave him a small kiss and thanked him for coming to Chicago and the game with me and that I was so happy to finally share this with him. And again, from a few rows back, someone yelled, that's effing disgusting. Don't do that here. You're ruining this for all of us. I immediately pulled my arm off Paul, knowing that this was directed towards us and was in complete shock. I think about this moment a lot. I wish I would have turned around. I wish I would have stood up. I wish I would have kept my arm around Paul. And so the show ends. We're walking out of the park. I feel horrible. I know Paul does too. And once we get back to the apartment, Paul starts crying and he says, this is why I only feel comfortable going to queer spaces. But the reason I'm sharing this story is because there's been such a push against Pride nights, the flag, celebrating Pride, but this is the exact reason for it because people believe and behave like this. The Sox had a Pride night this year, so thank you Sox. And it was amazing to see there was so much love and celebrating there. But every other comment on social media was degrading or horrific. I'm sharing this story, which happens all over our country these days, because if I can just change the mindset of one person who might not understand Pride or have them think in a different way around this, then it was worth it."
