"All right, still coming down from altitude after that big win on Monday morning, but I've definitely been reflecting on that Harry Kane penalty I'm a little bit frustrated with it. Here's why First of all, it is a penalty. He makes contact with the player by the letter of the law of the game But what actually happens in real time in the moment is he makes contact with the player the player's foot goes down Which to me indicates that it's not sufficient enough contact to properly have impeded him and then he goes down So I think there's a degree of simulation that's taken place there and I could understand why the referee has said I'm not giving it Now by the letter of the law Maybe it should have been given but the referee is not clearly and obviously wrong and this is where football is getting it Wrong with technology the faffing about with the game and adding all these things like water breaks And there's been some of the great rules as well like substitution rule 10 seconds to get off the pitch But technology is where they're getting it wrong Totally wrong No referee put yourself in the referee's shoes for a second If VAR whispers in your ear and says you better go and have a look at that No referee is going to walk over to the screen and say You know what? That is a penalty, but I didn't get it clearly and obviously wrong So I'm going to maintain my initial decision Now here's how it works in cricket in a test match. The captain's got three appeals And it almost takes the on field umpire out of the decision-making process and removes the pressure from them So the crowd can't get on top of them. They don't get any flack for it now the third umpire who's got the technology might look at it and say Appealing captain might be right, but it's not a clear and obvious umpiring decision So you captain you can maintain your appeal. You're not losing it You're not wrong, but we're going to stick with the man on the field because they've not made an obvious error that's the way it has to go in football it either needs to be the manager or The Mexico captain has to say I want you to go and have a look at that and the communication Over the tannoy needs to come from VAR after looking at the decision The referee has not made a clear and obvious error Mexico maintain their appeal but no penalty now It's not cost us in that game on Monday because the performance was absolutely stellar but The margins and what's at stake Is just too big To be having a situation where the referee Under the hostilities of the crowd the pressure of the moment can be under that much pressure It's an area that's just got to be looked at and changed after this tournament"
