"The closest analogy that forecasters point to when trying to calibrate the severity of the 2026 disruption is February and March of 2018. You may remember it, it was called the beast from the east. Anticyclone Hartmut formed from a sudden stratospheric warming that disrupted the polar vortex and allowed a massive Arctic air mass to sweep from Siberia across the entire European continent. Temperatures in Munich dropped to minus 17 degrees Celsius. In Berlin, minus 12, more than 10 degrees below the average February low. In Faversham, in the county of Kent in southern England, the temperature on the 28th of February 2018 plunged to minus 14.2 degrees Celsius, one of the coldest readings ever recorded in southern England. Snow fell on the Italian Riviera. Venice's St. Mark's Square vanished under a white blanket. In Poland, people froze to death in the streets, and city authorities began installing street heaters. In Romania, an elderly woman was found collapsed in the snow. In Sweden, a woman from Burkina Faso, with no shoes, died outside during the night, her two young children beside her. In the United Kingdom, 17 fatalities were attributed to the cold event across the two weeks of Hartmut's passage. Across Europe, the total death toll from that single polar vortex disruption reached at least two dozen people, probably more. And at the time, Ruth Matram, a climate scientist at the Danish Meteorological Institute, said something that should have stopped everyone cold. It has never been this extreme. But that was 2018. And scientists are now saying that the 2026 disruption, with its two sequential sudden stratospheric warming events, with its record early first event, with its complete split type collapse rather than a simple stretching, represents the closest analog to 2018 in the eight years since. And in some respects, it may exceed it. This is not a theory. This is documented atmospheric science. The evidence is not in speculation about what might happen. It is in the temperature anomaly maps, in the stratospheric wind reversals tracked by NASA, in the GFS ensemble forecasts, in the ECMWF model runs, in the real data streaming in from weather stations across the continent right now. The monitoring is in place, and the detection is certain. What the scientists cannot give you is the guarantee of the precise depth, duration, or exact geographic distribution of what is coming next. The question that researchers are actively working on but have not yet definitively answered is whether the record early sudden stratospheric warming event of late November 2025, the earliest in 70 years of measurement, is connected to an unusual pattern of solar and geomagnetic forcing on the polar stratosphere during this phase of solar cycle 25. The scientists are careful to say the connection requires further study. But that careful language, in a domain where a 0.9 correlation coefficient exists between the long term components of solar geomagnetic activity and polar temperature, carries its own weight. The system is not random, it is awake, and what the sun does does not stay in space. Consider what the Wikipedia article on the polar vortex notes, drawing on the physical literature, the breakdown of the polar vortex is an extreme event. The associated warming of 30 to 50 degrees Celsius over just a few days can occur"
