A monumental week for the Supreme Court. While executive power expands over independent agencies, the court drew an iron-clad line in the sand to protect individual constitutional rights. Watch this weekend's news audit with Josh Gillespie. #PrinciplesFirst
"Welcome to Principally Speaking, your daily news audit measuring current political power plays against the 15 core principles of our republic. I'm Josh Gillespie. I hope you had a wonderful Fourth of July. On a weekend marking America's 250th birthday, the Supreme Court has completely reshaped the balance of power in Washington. Let's look at the ledger. Issue 1. The End of Independent Agencies In a monumental administrative earthquake, the Supreme Court ruled in Trump v. Slaughter to officially overrule 91 years of legal precedent. The high court held that the president can now summarily fire commissioners of independent regulatory agencies like the FTC, NLRB, and EEOC at will, striking down statutory protections passed by Congress. This represents a massive shift for Principle 6, the separation of powers. While proponents argue it restores direct accountability to the elected executive, it actively challenges Principle 4, the rule of law. For nearly a century, these independent boards were insulated from partisan winds to protect businesses and workers from volatile policy swings. Now federal, labor, consumer, and financial rules will change overnight with every presidential election, replacing objective law with political compliance. Issue 2. The Guardrail's Hold On Citizenship But while the court expanded executive power over agencies, it drew an iron-clad line of sand on individual rights. In Trump v. Barbara, the justices ruled against an executive order that attempted to unilaterally end birthright citizenship for children born on American soil to undocumented parents. This is a definitive victory for Principle 2, individual dignity, and Principle 5, limited government. The court made it clear the 14th Amendment is absolute. A sitting president cannot use administrative decrees to overwrite the text of the Constitution or create a permanent underclass. Power remains subordinate to the law. Well, that's a wrap. True accountability requires independent checks, protected state sovereignty, and an absolute respect for individual constitutional rights. When the lines get blurred, the guardrails must hold. That's your Weekend Audit. Stay rational and stay principled."
